There is just something very charming and unavoidably watchable about bad and misguided Christmas TV, Films, and music. It is like a sleigh wreck; you want to look away but you cannot. Today is a good day for not looking away.
First, I present the worst Christmas movie of all time: SANTA CLAUS THE MOVIE. This is a 1959 release from Mexico, dubbed creatively into English.
This was imported to the US by the king of Saturday Matinee Schlock in the 50’s and 60’s, K. Gordon Murray. Murray released over 60 films in only 15 years, but in later life, he got in trouble with the IRS which seized his films and took them out of circulation for years. Suffice it to say that there are no master prints of this schlock.
SANTA CLAUS THE MOVIE places Santa’s North Pole up on a cloud, looking much like an observatory where Santa can see all the good and bad children, There, Santa seems to run a sweatshop staffed by horribly stereotypical children of all nationalities who seem to be slave labor. They work to build toys while Santa plays a maniacal organ.
Santa’s main adversary is Pitch, The Devil himself. He seems hellbent on making poor children hurt Santa by throwing rocks at Santa displays. Kind of like leaving a flaming bag of dog poop on a doorstep. Pitch also dances some sort of ballet with his devil friends.
You can read more about it here, if you dare.
And just to finish off, let’s all sing-along!
